BACKGROUND and FACT SHEET
Norfolk Storm, a Women’s Rugby Football Club, is currently in its 16th season. The club team has 35 registered members comprising of all ages and skill levels. The goal of the team is to promote the sport of women’s rugby and build the level of sportsmanship and camaraderie within the rugby community.
Rugby football is the English tackling game from which American football evolved in the late nineteenth century. There are currently over 1500 amateur men’s and women’s rugby clubs in the United States. (Source: Rugby Magazine, 2350 Broadway, NY, NY 10024, (212) 787-1160)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The Norfolk Storm has won the Virginia State Championships three times, Military National Club Championships twice, and various tournaments in the Southeast region. Several players represent the various unions in both national and international competition, and we have had players represent the Norfolk Storm as Eagles (highest level). This past season one player tried out and made the MARFU All-Star Team. The Norfolk Storm also another player, one of our youngest members (17 years old), go to Philadelphia and try out for the U20 National Team.
During the 2011 spring season the Norfolk Storm placed 1st in the local Tidewater Invitational Tournament, which is sponsored by the Virginia Beach Falcons and Norfolk Storm. They also placed 2nd in the annual Ruggerfest held in Washington D.C
AFFILIATION
The Norfolk Storm Women’s Rugby Football Club is a Division II competitive team. They are members of the USA Rugby Union,the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Union,and the Virginia Rugby Union.
Women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels are welcome.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!!
